Unique And Unusual Gift Ideas For Father’s Day

February 24th, 2008 by admin

Father’s Day is a wonderful time of year for men. It’s a wonderful time to honor them and a wonderful time to buy for them.

Let’s first talk about honoring our fathers. It is true that we have many homes without fathers. My heart goes out to those mothers and children who are not blessed with the love and attention of a wonderful man. My prayer for them is that they can overcome that deficit in their lives and be blessed in other ways.

Men play a critical role in the well being of our families. Father’s Day is the time of year we let them know how important they really are. Children make them cards and little gifts they will cherish forever, at least until they get lost in the drawer. But that’s O.K. We all lose things in the drawer, but we still have them.

Women want to find the perfect gift for their own father or the father of their children. We want to buy them something special to let them know we love them and to remind them of the important roll they play in our lives. But when you’re buying, don’t forget this rule - you’re not buying for yourself, you’re buying for them.

This is the man’s time of year. Everything manly is on sale. Is he into sports? You can find almost anything you want, from clothing to picture frames, sports mugs, gift baskets, jewelry and the list goes on. The same is true for the fisherman, the hunter, the golfer, the businessman and even the couch potato.

Outdoor shops have great selections for any outdoor activities including sports, hunting, fishing, camping, boating, etc. But if you can’t get to an outdoor shop, it doesn’t matter. You can still find something great on the web.

Online gift basket shops offer terrific ideas for men of all interests. For the couch potato who wants to enjoy the T.V. and snack, the businessman, the fisherman, or the hunter, they try to offer something for everyone.

Don’t forget personalized gifts. You can personalize pocket watches, jewelry, photo frames, mugs, desk accessories, etc. There are many great online sites that specialize in personalizing gifts. These gifts are extra special because you are giving more thought and attention to your selection.

And gadgets! Men love gadgets. It doesn’t matter if it’s electronic, mechanical, or somewhere in between, men love boy’s toys. These are hot sellers and they’re everywhere. You can find them in the stores and you can find them online.

Let the dad or dads in your life know they are special. When you give them their gifts and hugs, don’t forget to say, “I love you.” Men need to hear those words, too.

For our military dads serving away from home and perhaps in harm’s way, we’re all praying for their safe return so they can once again resume that all important roll of being “Dad”.

Whether at home or away, may God bless our Dads. Happy Father’s Day!

Judy Hardaway is the writer for Amazing Christmas Ideas, a Christmas decorations and gift ideas web site. While gifts are on sale for Father’s Day, why not also get him a gift for Christmas. For ideas, see Judy’s article about Christmas gifts for men and fathers.

What is the Worst “Lie” in Golf

February 23rd, 2008 by admin

Let us begin with a few myth busters, shall we.

Myths -

1) If you have a perfect golf swing you’ll have a perfect game.

2) You can buy a better game

3) Technology has lowered golfers scores

Most every golfer subscribes to these beliefs in one way or another. The entire golf instruction, training aid, and golf club making market bear this out. Golf magazines, tv shows, and article after article offer tips, fixes, cures and virtually every imaginable training aid conceivable to craft the perfect swing. All with the pretense of helping you play better golf.

Well has it worked? Let’s take a look…

In 1978 75% of all golfers never broke 90 - so barely 25% ever shot in the 80’s.

In 2004, a full 26 years later, after the advent of 460CC drivers with 45″ multi-kick point shafts, cavity back irons, balls that prevent hooks and slices, and world class instruction from the smartest minds in the buz, that number has been increased by a wopping 3%!

Now a full 28% of all golfers has broken 90! But hey, let’s cut the industry some slack, there’s only been 90+ billion spent on golf equipment over that time! That doesn’t include lessons or training aids! All that technology and collective wisdom and this is how far we’ve come…impressive, huh.

Seriously, any other business that produced numbers like these for their customers would be out of business! But the golfing public has an insatiable appetite that an ever growing horde of manufacturers and marketers are more than willing to feed.

Ok, do you want to pay me now or later for the moral booster? What? This doesn’t get you pumped about your prospects of dropping your handicap by 10 strokes by buying the next training aid?

You mean to tell me you’re not going to do that $2,500 re-shafting, ball changing, loft angle adjusting, launch angle increasing, club-fitting session you had booked for next Saturday? Hmmm, was it something I said?

As golfers we are bombarded with instruction tips, training options, and product offerings that’ll have your head spinning faster than Paris Hilton after swizzeling a half dozen Crantini’s.

So where’s the moral of this myth busting story? Do we all just give up trying to improve? Absolutely not. We all need to fulfill that important human craving of getting better at what we love. Yet where we place our attention to achieve this goal is what has to change. Our core beliefs about what causes improvement should be based on reality not myths. They should empower us, not encourage wishful thinking and needlessly empty our wallets.

“So if it isn’t gear that makes us better maybe it’s lessons,” did I hear you say? Certainly lessons are an asset and obviously accelerate your skill development yet they’re not absolutely essential. Ask Lee Trevino, Jim Furyk, Chris Dimarco and countless others who are self taught. And I think we can all agree that there isn’t much “pretty” about any of their swings.

Do you think any of them were intent on crafting the perfect swing? Yet if we look at things from a different perspective maybe they do have perfect swings. Why? Because they work! Golf ain’t a beauty contest.

In the final analysis there is only one area that promotes the quickest and most lasting change in any golfers game. And what’s interesting about it is this is the only area that doesn’t cost a penny to use yet almost no-one uses it!

That area is the often quoted 6 inches between your ears! Your mind. The mental game. Using your mind in a strategic, methodical and focused way is the surest method of lowering your scores. Period.

If you want to run out and spend $500 on a new driver and another $1000 or more on irons to make you play better, feel free. You might be that one in a million that changes the statistics. I realize we’ll all buy nice gear once in a while but we can’t buy it with a belief that this will seriously lower our scores.

Needless to say, my articles won’t be sponsored by Taylor Made or Nike any time soon! I don’t help sell much golf equipment! No, my approach to lowering your handicap, improving your swing, and increasing your satisfaction leans towards inner change before outer gains.

True improvement only arrives when we first assess where we are in relation to our goal. Then we must take an inventory of all the things that have actually produced measurable results. Which means no denial! We can’t hope to move our game to the next level by hanging on to a lie, now can we? If you do then that’s what I call a real “hanging lie”. Ok, that was a cheap pun but it was there for the taking…

Each and every one of us has the innate ability to tap our own potential and transform any part of our lives, including golf. We just require the right road map and a good compass to keep us on target.

It’s time to wake up and smell the napalm or the myths that cloud our brains will keep us believing we can buy a better game.

I’m a Peak Performance Coach with a Masters in Results. A Baby Boomer’s Guide to Gifting When Mom or Dad Live in Assisted Living

February 22nd, 2008 by admin

Today’s Vistit Baby Boomers are caregivers for a generation of elders, and buying gifts for these parents, aunts and uncles is a special challenge; in fact, sometimes it becomes a dreaded task. There’s no feeling quite like giving a gift that is truly loved or appreciated, but what the heck do we buy for parents in Assisted Living?

Their meals are provided. Some have a small kitchen but most don’t cook, so kitchen-things are out. Many have lost a spouse but remain mobile and still drive. Collectibles are no longer important, but quality of life is. Most need some level of care, and almost all have some arthritic or vision problems. Many need to be financially cautious and others can buy whatever they want. Regardless of the level of mobility or finances, most are giving away their “things” rather than wanting more.

Here are a few ideas, some useful and some capricious:

For Men and Women

A watch with a 3x-magnifying lens cover. Some even come with a flashlight in the face of the watch for reading menus or labels.

A lighted magnifying mirror for the bathroom vanity, with a magnification of up to 10x. We call them a “make- up” mirror but they’re useful for men as well as women. We need to stay in-touch with our ears, eyes and skin condition. When eyesight is weakened, a magnification mirror is a handy thing to have.

Gift certificates for manicures, pedicures, and shampoos. You think your dad won’t consider a pedicure, manicure or shampoo? Think again…he just might. Peek in a salon at the mall. More and more elderly men are in spa chairs. It’s a luxury. It makes a guy or gal feel great.

A pedometer to record daily steps and bring awareness to their activity-level.

A blanket made of down or a down “alternative.” These blankets are sleek and lightweight, and can be machine-washed many times. They are just a soft, light touch to the skin, but they’re very warm.

For Women

Magnetic necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Manufacturers have answered the call for good quality jewelry for arthritic or trembling hands. If you can’t find it locally, look on-line.

A bed jacket for cold mornings or evenings. After a long absence from lingerie departments, bed jackets are back in high fashion. She’ll feel cozy and beautiful in her bed jacket.

Gather-up some bridge tallies, score pads, pretty pens and a nice deck of bridge cards. Don’t settle for just any bridge cards. Find a theme that you know she loves, like scenes of Italy, or flowers or famous artists. Museum gift shops are a good source for bridge sets. Put them in a beautiful gift box for storage. These boxes can be found at a hobby store. If you find the right box, it can be stored in plain sight and be used as a room decoration.

For Men

Pre-knotted ties.

Over-sized dominoes with high-contrast black dots on white.

Ball caps with favorite logos of golf or sporting teams.

Extra-long golf tees and a great looking set of head covers.

Once Mom is gone, Dad might not think about family memorabilia that she so lovingly cared for and stored away. Arrange military photos and documents into albums or books — frame some for his walls. He might be shy about doing it himself, but he’ll be thrilled you did.

How To Find Discount Golf Equipment

February 22nd, 2008 by admin

If you are looking for discounts on golf equipment, then you probably already know that they aren’t too easy to find. Golf equipment is very expensive and can sometimes be downright unaffordable. If you know where to look and how to scout out the best deals, however, golfing doesn’t have to break the bank account.

Every golfer needs a quality set of golf clubs, which are readily available at retail and specialty stores. Whether you are looking to shop online or in person, the same rules apply to snagging a good deal. With everyone advertising their price to be the best, it can sometimes be difficult to know which one really is the bargain and which ad is just boasting a high price disguised as a sale. The best way to learn the answer is to simply shop around.

The first place that you will want to look for golf equipment is at a clearance or closeout sale. This could either be at a local retail or golf specialty store. During the year, especially as the golfing season draws near an end, retailers offer amazing discounts on their outdoor sports equipment. Everyone knows that the winter months aren’t really ideal for the sports fanatic, so plan your bargain shopping accordingly.

If there aren’t any bargains to be found in the retail world, consider a quick visit to your nearest golf course. While you are there, ask if they have any previously used golf equipment for sale. As a recreational area, golf courses have to keep the newest and most innovative pieces of equipment available for their customers. In doing so, they often have to unload their equipment from the previous year(s) and this could mean big savings for you if you know when to ask. The best time is just before a new golf season is about to begin, which is when the new equipment will be arriving. You know the old saying, “out with the old and in with the new.” If you decide to purchase used golf equipment, make sure that you aren’t buying something that is badly damaged or broken. Inspect the equipment closely before sealing the deal.

If you are still in search of discounts on golf equipment and just haven’t found the perfect deal as of yet, consider browsing the classified ads in your local newspaper. This may be a great way to find anything, including previously owned golf equipment. And best of all, there are no shipping fees involved if a product can be found locally. This isn’t always the case with online shopping, including the use of online auctions. When browsing online, consumers should be ready to pay a hefty shipping charge.

If all else fails, stop by the local flea market and/or garage and yard sales. A number of people may be looking to clear out their old golf equipment and you may just be the one to benefit if you can find a terrific set of golf clubs at the right price. With so many shopping options, there are plenty of ways to find discount golf equipment without emptying your wallet.

Building Your Way To Online Success Part 5

February 21st, 2008 by admin

We’ve spent some quality time with the first two crucial elements to a successful business startup.

Here’s a recap:

Step 1: DECIDE WHAT YOUR BUSINESS IS GOING TO BE

Step 2: CREATE A WEBSITE

With the next step we are actually only degrees of separation from Step 2: CREATE A WEBSITE. However, we will be designating a new step entitled “MARKET YOUR WEBSITE”. This new designation has the subtle distinction of moving your site from form and function to frequently visited through the use of common search engines.

STEP 3 then is: MARKET YOUR WEBSITE

If you’ve got a mental checklist going you’ve probably checked off site design, site content, and ease of use in navigation. The next item on your list is the actual launch of your website and the implementation of a comprehensive marketing campaign.

First, be sure you have determined what your most important keywords or key phrases should be. This information should include some research into what the end user is likely to select when conducting an online search. For repeat reference, keywords are the word or phrases that relate to a particular topic. Keywords or phrases are used to construct a search statement to locate information. In my previous article, I suggested that you need to add as many of these important keywords and key phrases throughout your website’s text as you can.

Before you officially launch your marketing campaign, you need to ensure that your “META TAGS” are properly constructed. A META TAG is a specific kind of HTML tag that contains information not typically displayed to the user. Meta tags are designed to contain information about the page itself, hence the name (”meta” means “about this subject”). Meta tags are a prime source search engines use to best categorize a page. The better the meta tag - the better your information will place in a search engine.

Meta Tags go between the < head > < /head > tags in your site’s html.
I suggest using these four major meta tags:
< title >Add your site’s title here< /title >
This describes your site. Be sure to use your important keywords and key phrases. Search engines will see the site title first.
< META name="resource-type" content="document" >
The only resource type that is currently in use is “document” This is the only tag that you need to put in for indexing purposes, but the use of the remaining tags is a good idea.

< META name="description" content="a description of your page" >
Depending on the search engine, this information will generally be displayed along with the title of your page in an index. “Content” could be a word, sentence or even paragraph used to describe your page. Keep this reasonably concise and to the point. However, don’t be so lean with your description that it does not adequately reflect the sites actual content!

Choose keywords or key phrases you deem appropriate then separate them by commas. Remember to include synonyms, Americanisms and so on. For instance, if you had a page dedicated to cars, you might want to include keywords such as car, cars, vehicles, automobiles and other similar keywords.

Each of these meta tags should be added to the html of your site between the < head > and < /head > tags.

If your business provided customers with golfing equipment, you may add your meta tags as shown below:
< title >Golf equipment - Golf world golf equipment.< /title >
Notice I used Golf and golf equipment. These are the main keywords and key phrases I have chosen to target so I make sure they are included.
Once you’ve completed the above step you would use the following tag:
< META name="resource-type" content="document" >

Just leave this as is - no other alterations are required.

The next step allows you to place your description tag:

< META name="description" content="Golf World, the premier site for golf equipment. Golf clubs and more!" >

Once again, I used several of my most important keywords and key phrases.

The final step allows you to add your keywords meta tag:

< META name="keywords" content="golf equipment, golf clubs, golf balls, golfing supply, callaway ">

You may even want to add specific brand names if applicable.

Once you have these tags complete, be sure to place them between the < head > and < /head > tags in your html.

If you are using a site builder such as our HighPowerSites builder (http://www.HighPowerSites.com) tags are not required. Simply add your title, description and keywords from your site builder control panel. You will not have to deal with placing them in the site using the language of html. This user-friendly function is an asset for those who have limited to no experience with html.

The Secret To A Better Golf Game

February 21st, 2008 by admin

A better golf game is achievable by any golfer. It doesn’t matter what your age is, how good a player you are or how long you’ve been playing. But the key to a better golf game may not be what you think.

The ’standard’ approach to a better golf game is taking lessons; buying more equipment; and hitting hundreds of golf balls at the range.

Although, the above approach is not altogether incorrectthere is one crucial missing element. That element is your BODY! You swing those fancy clubs; you hit all those balls at the range; and you physically participate in the aspect of taking lessons.

The common denominator is your body. Do you agree? If you don’t, I’d like to hear you’re explanation of why not.

If you are following me, and think I’m remotely correct, then why wouldn’t you work on your body to play a better golf game?

I’m constantly hearing golfers say they’ve taken lessons, bought new equipment and pounded hundreds of balls but still have not seen improvement.

That’s the telltale!

That leaves just one thingYOU.

Don’t get me wrongI firmly believe you need an understanding of golf swing technique, and golf equipment can help. But pounding balls just for the sake of doing it won’t help you play a better golf game.

Now picture this.

You do a few simple stretches and golf exercises daily and go out to play. You now realize you can make a bigger backswing with less tension; you have more clubhead speed enabling you to hit longer drives; and you are not worn out on the back nine.

Isn’t that worth the minimal investment in your time?

To play a better golf gameyou’ve got to take a different approach than what you are currently doing. One that gets to the root of the problem. The one that’s causing those mishits and inconsistencies.

You will be amazed at your outcome if you take this approach. You will finally play a better golf game.

Improving Your Golf Balance

February 20th, 2008 by admin

The need for balance for golf just sounds so simple and easy. As a golfer, you know that maintaining proper golf balance is a key to a good golf game. And it’s more than just having the correct stance.

Optimum golf balance depends on three aspects: your visual perception, the signals from the inner ear, and signals from your muscles and joints. Sometimes these aspects get out of sync, causing a balance disorder. Most of which can be easily fixed with some simple ideas.

A lack of balance usually occurs when your head position changes, which is a good reason to keep your head still during your swing! How many times have you been told or noticed yourself that you looked up during your swing? Everybody wants to see where their ball is going and when you move your head and throw off your balance, the ball doesn’t usually go anywhere. At least not where you wanted it to go. So, keep your head down and still and let your playing partners watch for your ball.

Migraines can attribute to a balance disorder. So if you have frequent migraines, seek medical attention. These headaches can affect your golf game in ways you may never have thought of. Not to mention being just plain painful and debilitating.

Also, don’t go spending a fortune on new golf equipment hoping for better play before you check your medicine cabinet to see if any drugs you’re taking affect your balance. The condition “ear poisoning” seriously affects your balance. Ear poisoning is usually caused by side effects of some medications. Always be aware of the possible side effects of any prescription drugs you may be taking. This is just good advice all the way around, let alone it having an effect on your golf game.

Diuretics can pose a problem as well. So if you’re taking any of these and you start feeling dizzy, get medical help! Sometimes the dizziness can literally become a lifelong problem, so don’t delay in seeking help.

If your golf balance is a little off in your game, you may want to do some simple exercises to improve it. Just kicking a ball around your backyard can help. You can also set up a little obstacle course and weave in and out of it to improve your balance. If you have kids, they will have fun with the course, too! Actually, they may even set up one for you!

You can also buy a balance board to help you with your center of gravity. You can easily make one yourself out of some scrap wood or you could find a nice one online or at a local fitness equipment store. These boards are challenging and fun to use. Once you can balance for an extended period on one, pick up a golf club. Then practice your backswing while balancing yourself. This will dramatically improve you golf balance.

In addition, working with flexibility exercises helps increase your golf balance by releasing muscle tension. Try some simple yoga stretches to help with loosening up tight muscles. Yoga or pilates can be a real benefit for the golfer. These types of exercises tend to create long lean muscles and promote flexibility. Just what the golfer needs for the right golf balance and a fluid swing.

Another useful item is a yoga ball or exercise ball. Even just sitting on one of these balls requires balance - so try using one for part of the day. Work up gradually until you can sit on the ball for 30 minutes at a time. These ball exercises can help you develop proper posture, increase the mobility of your lower back, and develop overall control of your body core. Improving your core strength and flexibility will help you develop the correct golf balance.

Since balance is fundamental to every aspect of your golf game, spend some time each day working on developing it. Who knows? You could find your swing and your score improving significantly, and who couldn’t use that!

Today’s Labels May Grossly Overstate The Obvious

February 20th, 2008 by admin

Frivolous lawsuit claims are taking labeling in a whole new direction that borderline on silliness. Some labels wording is so off that you wonder what the manufacturer was thinking. While labels provide relevant information that many consumers find useful like warnings and contents, many consumers are finding labels that seem to little more than overstate the obvious. Has common sense gone out the window or do labels really need to contain so much information?

One morning at a McDonald’s drive through window, an elderly woman received a coffee that was too hot to sip and ended up spilling on her lap. She won a lawsuit mainly because the coffee did not warn her that it might be hot. Hence, “caution: hot” was since imprinted on all McDonald Styrofoam cups. Of course, you could argue that this type of information needed to be stated. Most labels try to inform a consumer about contents and processes used in making the goods. However, do you really need to be told that a bag of carrots contain “Ingredients: Carrots”? Also, many labels offer valuable warnings or guidelines such as age appropriateness. However, do you need to be warned that a Harry Potter broom “does not actually make a child fly”?

Various sources in the different industries decide on label regulations. For example, the Food and Drug Association (FDA) regulated ingredient and nutrition labels for the U.S. food industry. As for label warnings and instructions, most company lawyers and some federal laws advise the wording.

For fun, many websites - such as DumbNetwork.com - are devoted to cracking jabs at some of the sillier labels in today’s market. Below are some highlights of the dumber warnings and instructions for the average consumer:

- “Not suitable for driving under conditions of poor light.” (Ray Ban Sunglasses)
- “Instructions: Put on food.” (Heinz Ketchup)
- “Do not use while sleeping.” (Blow dryer)
- “Never iron clothes on the body.” (Rowenta iron)

Lots of labels instruct you on how to remove wrapping or empty the box contents first. This might sound silly at first, but many users are starting with many basic skills and require much spelled out. In other words, what seems obvious to you might not seem obvious to someone else - perhaps these words might make a great label some day! Sometimes manufacturers include words that might sound like common sense but are actually attempts at discouraging undesirable use of their product. For example, did you know many golf carts have the warning “not for highway use” to discourage joy riding on the road.

As silly or as dumb as many labels read, the need for labeling is very necessary to protect companies from frivolous lawsuits or to protect the consumer from danger. Whatever the real reason is perhaps one hair-coloring manufacturer may have hit the nail on the head when it included this warning on its box “Do not use as an ice cream topping”.

How to Make Your Own Gourmet Gift Baskets

February 19th, 2008 by admin

Making your own gourmet gift baskets is not only fun but also an affordable alternative to purchasing them ready made. Before picking out the gift basket itself, decide what candy you will be placing inside and how many you will want for each basket. For every holiday, you have the opportunity to show off your talent - Valentine’s gift basket, Mother’s day gift baskets and Christmas gift baskets.

A trip to your local candy store will give you a huge assortment of choices. Individual candies are available wrapped in very pretty and elegant wrappings. Many other themed candy wrappings are commonly available. Sports themed wrapping, holiday and birthday themes are popular.

Another alternative is to buy bulk candy and create small individual packages for your baskets using small cloth bags or squares of transparent wrap or tissue paper filled with the candies. The corners are then gathered up and tied with a bow. This is not only another cost cutting idea, but also helps to add a personal feeling to the gift basket. Consider the recipient when wrapping your own candies. Is she a teenage girl? Replace the bow with a clip or pretty scrunchie for her hair. Is it a male friend? Ask yourself what his interests are and what activities he enjoys. Perhaps you tie a golf tee under the bow of a candy assortment, or the bow atop the basket itself could be created from a necktie.

For a larger variety of candy choices than you have locally, consider the option to buy candy online. A quick entry into a search engine for a candy online store will bring you many more choices to consider for your baskets.

Once you have decided what will go into your gourmet gift baskets, you can then choose a style and size of basket. When making several different baskets, don’t limit yourself to the same choice for them all. The basket choice for each recipient can be just as personal as what you choose to put inside. Consider what they might do with the basket once the contents are removed. And also don’t limit yourself to just baskets! For a child a fun lunch box or backpack might be just the thing. A lady can always use another cosmetic bag or handbag. A gentleman would no doubt find a use for a metal tin or a small travel bag. Consider filling a beautiful vase, a large coffee mug or something as unusual & unexpected as a Chinese take out box for that friend whose favorite lunch is moo goo gai pan

With just a little thought to the recipients likes and interests you can make a gourmet gift basket really special. Personalization is the key. We all love chocolate candy, but as we grow older some of us begin to consider it a forbidden fruit. How did something that ancient civilizations considered the food of the gods become so strife with controversy today?

Isn’t that the reason you’ve decided to create your own?

Natalie Aranda writes about food and family. Gourmet gift baskets are perfect choices for birthday gifts, anniversary gifts or wedding gifts. Making your own gourmet gift baskets is not only fun but also an affordable alternative to purchasing them ready made.
